April 16, 2022 – Steven Berghuis returns to De Kuip’s cup final against PSV on Sunday night. He is known to have played at Feyenoord Stadium for no less than four seasons before feeling sensitive to Ajax last summer. Before returning, he looked back at that passionate summer for the last time.
Berghuis, for example, told Algemeen Dagblad that he did not want to miss the opportunity to play Ajax in the Champions League. “I’m an ambitious boy from Apeldoorn, eh. I mean, we’re not all from Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Eindhoven. If you play in your hometown, a big club where you’re involved early on, I understand very well that you’re making a different decision. Players like Justin Bijlow in Feyenoord or Cody Gakpo in PSV. ”
“I also discussed this with Georginio Wijnaldum during the European Championships,” Berghuis continued. “He said, ‘If they can get someone else for you, so will the clubs.’ That’s how it works. Careers are short, choices are crucial. I think it can also be seen from a business point of view. As a supporter, you can sit on the stands of the club for twenty years before the Champions League comes. Player A doesn’t have that time. ”
