Born in Paramaribo, Sponge, 36, has been a boxer since 2015. Prior to that, he also fought as a kicker, including on behalf of Glory. As a pure boxer, he won all fourteen matches, thirteen times in a knockout. Although it must be said that he has never shared a ring with anyone like Ruiz Jr.
Spong meets his former Mexican-American opponent in the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and former IBO champions. In 2019, Ruiz Jr created a sensation by defeating Anthony Joshua, taking away his four championships from Britain. Six months later, however, he missed out on a rematch and Joshua won his title again. Ruiz Jr lost only two of his 36 matches.
Spong’s last match was MMA’s fight against Sergei Haritonov. The Suriname Dutchman, known for his devastating blows, did not respond to the Russian on the ground and lost in the second round with a technical knockout.
The name Spongi has also been regularly associated with Rico Verhoeven in recent years. Both have said more than once that they do not want to fight, but it has not (yet) reached a real clash. Like “King of Kickboxing”, Spong has the royal nickname “King of the Circle” and as a kickboxer he beats greats such as Melvin Manhoef, Peter Aerts, Remy Bonjasky and Ray Sefo.
