Xi holds the crown of politics as discontent grows in Shanghai Abroad

Residents of Shanghai on social networks express their dissatisfaction with the shortage of food and medicine and quarantine centers, among others. Some people also criticize the corona policy, others say the local government has failed. An article titled “The Patience of the People in Shanghai Has Reached Its Limit” was removed from the WeChat platform after the message went viral.

During a visit to Hainan province, Xi implied that China must adhere to a strict policy, despite growing dissatisfaction and negative economic consequences. He said “crippled thoughts” and “war fatigue” needed to be overcome while preventing imported cases of infection and local coronavirus outbreaks.

According to the Chinese president, there can be no relaxation and “perseverance” leads to victories. Beijing has long had much success with its zero-covid policy. After the first months of the pandemic, corona numbers have remained low for a long time, but the omicron variant is now causing more and more Chinese to be infected. Millions of people are also in isolation outside of Shanghai.

Most reports of infection come from Shanghai. More than 27,700 new cases were reported there on Thursday, a new daily record. A local official expects the number to increase further in the near future due to delayed test results and mutual infection of family members.
